World Series Freebies

There is a furniture store in Boston that had a promotion before the Baseball season began. The offer was that the customers would be reimbursed for the full cost of any furniture they bought at the store between March and April, if the Red Sox won the World Series. The owner of the store took out insurance against the chance that it would happen. And on Sunday night, it did happen! Now those who bought furniture in the spring will get a wonderful rebate in the fall!

And to think I was excited about getting a free Taco this afternoon!

Saddest Day of the Year

This is my least favorite day of the year. Not the date. It is the day that the baseball season is officially over for the year. It means I have to wait till February for there to be any baseball stories in the newspaper, box scores to read. It is very hard to hold my breath from now till mid-February when Spring Training opens!

Chicago Limo

I was planning on going to the playoffs for Major league baseball this year, but I was planning to go to Minute Maid Park. But I guess I’m going to see the playoffs going to get a plane to O’Hare Airport and get a Chicago limousine to Wrigley Field. Fortunately I have found this limousine.com online and they will be able to provide me with the luxury of safety I want to while I’m in the Windy City. I think I’ll order one of their Hummer limousines to drop me and pick me up. That way I know I’ll be in time for the first pitch.

Trades Not Made

In Major League Baseball sometimes the best trade is the one you did not make. Maybe the players you thought of trading will relax and play better after the trade deadline. Or trading may have cost you too much for the long run. Or the guy you receive in return may not be as effective in the new setting as he was in the old. But the failure of the Houston Astros to trade Brad Lidge when his value had climbed may end up being a bad decision.

The Day After

I have always, since I was a little boy, thought that the worst day of the baseball season is the day after the All Star Game. There are no games scheduled on that day, so that the players in the game can travel to the cities where their teams will begin play, most of them tomorrow. About the only day worse for a baseball fan is the day after the World Series, when there will be no ball games till the spring!

Cal Ripken Jr Day

Cal Ripken jr. was a great Major League Baseball player, one of the best shortstops to ever play the game. He was much more than an Iron Man with the longest consecutive games played streak, he was a fine fielder, a productive hitter and a good team mate. Ripken was a sparkling representative for the game. Beyond that he is a good neighbor and good citizen. It is always nice to pay respects to a man like Mr. Ripken!

O and 5!

Is you come so much for her to do nothing lead to the fourth.  In the sixth inning the St. Louis  Cardinals scored a couple runs on a how it holds double into the left-field corner and then held on for a three to two win.  That leaves Woody Williams with an 0-5 record for the new season.  He’s pitched well enough to win at least three of those losses, which again points to the idea that the offense is just not up to snuff yet this season.

It Is NOT Just A Game!

I don’t know what brought her to mind; maybe it was the disappointment that the Astros were unable to catch the Cardinals on the last day of the season for Houston . I had not thought of the incident or the girl in many years.

Her name was Glenda Sue, and I had an ongoing crush for her from our days in kindergarten. In first grade, while playing tag at recess, Sue caught me and gave me my first kiss from a girl who was not related to me. We were close
friends for the next six years.

When we were in the sixth grade, my Little League team was having a get together. It was an ice cream social, to be capped off with a Father/Son game. Sue had a little brother who was on my team, so she was at the party. When it came time for the game, there were only eight dads there. So Sue was
invited to play for the dad’s team.

That was fine with me, until the last inning. In that inning, with a man on base, Sue hit a ball over the fence to win the game for the dads!

We were never close after that game!

800 for A-Rod

Alex Rodriguez has already hit ten home runs this season. I doubt he is being booed in New York, at least for the moment. He will, barring injury, far surpass the 500 home run mark this season. I wonder if he can stay healthy enough to surpass Barry Bonds in the career homer category. Bonds will likely finish with at least 770. A-Rod would have to hit an average 31 homers for ten years to get to 800. That is a lot, but A-Rod seems to be able to do at least that–if health is not a factor!

LUKE or LANE?

With Hunter Pence back in the minor leagues, the outfield situation is getting closer to being settled for the Astros, at least for the short term. It appears to me that Richard Hidalgo’s days with the team are numbered and that either Jason Lane or Luke Scott will be the starter in right field. Carlos Lee will be in left, Chris Burke in center. My guess is that Lane will be the starter and Luke the big bat off the bench. They may go straight platoon, though I do not like that for either player.

There is the possibility that either Lane or Scott could be traded, hopefully for some pitching, and the other be the starter, with Hidalgo off the bench. If that is the case, I expect it to be Lane traded.
